Plot
Immensely popular, this tremendously enjoyable 1960 re-working of the Japanese classic The Seven Samurai became deeply influential on the coming decade's westerns, not just in setting and theme, but also in the identification of characters with weaponry (epitomised here by James Coburn and his knife). A black clad Yul Brynner portrays Chris, leader of a crack team of mercenaries whose number include Steve McQueen and Charles Bronson hired to protect a village from the evil rapacious Eli Wallach. The director was the talented John Sturges, who also made Gunfight at the O.K Corral and The Great Escape , and the superb photography was enhanced by a now classic archetypal theme from composer Elmer Bernstein. The Magnificent Seven set new standards for generations of westerns to come.
