| Black and White is a riveting film based on the true story of one of the most sensational criminal trials in Australian history. Christmas 1958. The relative peace and quiet of Adelaide is shattered by news of the brutal rape and murder of nine-year-old Mary Hattam. A young aboriginal man, Max Stuart (David Ngoombujarra), is arrested and charged, and subsequently signs a confession. When solicitor David O'Sullivan (Robert Carlyle) is appointed to defend the accused, his investigations reveal that the arresting officers may have beaten the confession out of an innocent man. O'Sullivan and his legal partner, Helen Devaney (Kerry Fox), proceed to take on the formidable might of the Crown Prosecution. Their only support is the 28-year-old editor and proprietor of the local populist tabloid newspaper, The Adelaide News – Rupert Murdoch (Ben Mendelsohn). |
